In a remarkable stride for Bible translation in Zambia, the Bible and Literature Translation Association (BiLTA) has launched a solar energy system and installed Starlink internet connectivity at its national head office in Lusaka. This game-changing development, made possible through a strategic partnership with Wycliffe UK and Ireland and SIL Africa Global, marks a significant breakthrough in operational efficiency and digital connectivity for the ministry.
At the heart of this project is Mr. David Oandah, Area Project Manager for SIL Africa ICT Services, who provided critical oversight to ensure the successful implementation of both the solar and Starlink systems. The goal was simple but profound: to overcome the persistent power and internet challenges that have hindered BiLTA’s mission-driven operations for years.
“Zambia has faced prolonged power outages that have negatively impacted our work,” said Mr. Goma Mtumbi, BiLTA’s National Executive Treasurer. “We were forced to rely on a diesel generator, which consumed large amounts of fuel and created unbearable noise. The coming of solar power has drastically reduced our expenses and environmental impact. The simultaneous installation of Starlink internet means we now have uninterrupted, high-speed connectivity, a real game changer for how we operate.”
The dual installation could not have come at a better time. In a digital era where effective communication, data sharing, and online collaboration are essential, unreliable power and the internet posed serious obstacles to BiLTA’s coordination, training, and participation in global Bible translation efforts.
“God has continued to open doors for BiLTA,” said Father Jackson Jones Katete, BiLTA’s National Executive Chairperson. “From the creation of our head office to the installation of this solar and internet system, we have seen His hand. Yes, the journey came with challenges: program coordination, human resource management, setting up an accounting department but the biggest were power shortages and poor network access. Now, with solar and Starlink, we can operate without interruption. It’s more than infrastructure, it's a miracle of provision.”
These upgrades are more than just practical solutions; they are spiritual tools, enabling the continued expansion of Bible translation work into Zambia’s most remote language communities. The improved systems now allow the Head office BiLTA staff to participate in international meetings, conduct remote training, and build capacity without disruptions.
The collaboration with Wycliffe UK and Ireland and SIL Africa stands as a shining example of the power of global partnerships in advancing the Gospel. The equipment, funding, and technical expertise provided have not only addressed BiLTA’s immediate needs but laid a sustainable foundation for future growth.
“Technology is now playing a vital role in the mission of God,” said Father Katete. “We’re grateful that through this partnership, we can use cutting-edge solutions to carry out timeless work bringing God’s Word to people in their own language.”
Indeed, the successful installation of solar energy and Starlink internet at BiLTA's head office represents more than a technological milestone; it's a prophetic step forward. With physical light powering spiritual light, and with a stable internet connecting hearts and minds across the globe, BiLTA is positioned to shine brighter than ever in its mission to make the Scriptures accessible to all.
